Dear friends of Qigong and Tai Chi,

NEWS

Photo taken by me in Jan 2012, when I was on hermit retreat in the woods.

People comment to me that with ongoing COVID and huge upswing in "case numbers" that they are staying inside.  "It's terrible, I feel like I'm a hermit" is something I hear a lot.

It reminds me of when I used to take annual hermit retreats in the winter time.  I would take a month off, usually end of December through January and spend it in total isolation in a hermit cabin in the woods (See above photo, taken by me in Jan 2012, almost 10 years ago to the date).

It wasn't a time of "punishment", but a time of rejuvenation.  A time to detoxify from the stressors of life and a time to devote to dedicated practice.

Actually, it's one of the reasons I was able to advance so deeply into the Daoist practices at a (fairly) young age!

I would spend the whole day resting, doing qigong, doing meditation, doing some light reading, and spiritual contemplation.  A real transformative time.

There were certain aspects of it that were very hard, most definitely.  The solitude and isolation force things to the surface from deep within, that are not easy to escape from, in the barren wilderness.

But the cleansing and the detoxification by facing it all and doing practices to flush it out, advanced me more in a month, than the whole preceding year.  But I digress . . .

The point is, is that what is terrible vs. what is desirable is a function of the state of your mind and your attitude.

One of the things I did during that time, every morning, was to do Yiquan standing meditation for grounding and to do a Tao Yin qigong set (floor exercises) as a way to ground and invigorate the new day.  This is the focus of our upcoming MORNING PRACTICE, starting this Wednesday.

I invite you to join me.

No travel to a hermit cabin in the woods needed. :)  You can join from home via Zoom.  [see below]

MORNING PRACTICE WINTER ONLINE 2022

MORNING PRACTICE:  Yiquan Standing Meditation + Tao Yin Qigong--ONLINE--(No prereqs):  9 Wednesdays:  Jan 5, 12, 19, 26; Feb 2, 9, 16, 23; Mar 2  AT 7:30AM EASTERN TIME ZONE

This is a morning practice opportunity that has NO PREREQUISITES.

The purpose of this is PRACTICE.  It is non-instructional, with the exception of the guided instruction of the actual practice.

NO background is necessary to enroll as the necessary details for how to do the practice are given in the morning practice itself.

The practice itself is a guided practice, consisting of both a physical standing meditation and a set of flowing floor exercises.

Regarding the physical standing meditation part, it is a wonderful 20-minute practice that will allow your body to wake up naturally.

It will provide emotional stability to your day, which is arguably the most important thing you can do for yourself.

After that, we will lie down to do Tao Yin Qigong.  No background in this is necessary.

This Tao Yin Qigong set will focus on releasing tension in the lower back, which surrounds the psoas muscle and the kidney energy.  Our set will also include Full Body Breathing and a seated Lotus Meditation.

At the end of our session (about an hour and a half each Wednesday), we will have an optional 10-15 minute period for questions and answers.

To take the practice deeper

Our goal will be to dive into both practices deeply, with a minimal amount of regular time commitment.

That said, additional details and supportive materials are covered optionally in the Basics 1 course (offered this March 2022).

However, this PRACTICE PERIOD is independent of Basics 1, and there is no obligation to enroll in that coursework.
